A Y-tunnus is not a licence to run every trade. Some activities need a permit, a notification, a professional qualification, or a regular report. Examples include taxi services, serving alcohol, social and health services, certain food premises, electrical contracting, and excise products (alcohol, tobacco, soft drinks, some fuels and electricity). The list depends on what you do and where you do it.
Suomi.fi collects permit and obligation information by topic. The decision is made by the authority named there: the municipality, AVI, Traficom, Valvira, Tukes, Customs or another body. Some permits must be renewed. Some notifications are repeated on a timetable.
Food businesses often notify the municipal food control. Events and stalls may need a place permit from the city even when the market organiser has a main permit. Building, environmental and advertising rules are local.
Practical advice
Write down the activity in plain words (for example “I bake bread at home and sell it at a market”). Search that activity on Suomi.fi before you sign a lease.
If the site names a form, file that form. Do not substitute an email to a random department.
Keep copies of decisions. Inspectors will ask for them.
